How the 1447 AH Season Went

Hajj 2026 took place from May 24 to May 29 under extreme heat — 42°C to 47°C during the day at the holy sites, with night temperatures in Muzdalifah never dropping below 38°C. Despite these conditions, the season ended with no epidemic outbreaks and no critical failures in crowd management.

According to the General Authority for Statistics of Saudi Arabia (GASTAT), the total number of pilgrims reached 1,707,301 — up 2.04% from 2025 (1,673,230), though still below the 2024 record of more than 1.83 million.

Key fact: Saudi meteorologists classified 2026 as the final year of the current “hot cycle.” Due to the shift of the lunar calendar, Hajj will gradually move into cooler spring months in the coming seasons.

Pilgrim Demographics

Citizens and residents of KSA160,6469.4%
Men893,39652.3%
Women813,90547.7%

Hajj is an almost entirely international market: over 90% of pilgrims arrived from abroad. The share of women reached 47.7% — a result of visa liberalization and the removal of the mandatory mahram requirement in several visa categories.

Arrival Logistics: Air Travel Dominates

✈️ Air transport — 1,485,72996.1%
🚍 Land transport — 54,4293.5%
🚢 Sea transport — 6,4970.4%

Through the Makkah Route pre-clearance initiative, 388,694 pilgrims from 10 countries (with Senegal and Brunei joining for the first time) completed customs and immigration in their home airports. AI-powered mobile terminals cut average border processing time to a record 40 seconds per person.

Geography: Asia Is the Core of the Market

Asia (non-Arab countries)≈63.3%
Arab countries≈22.3%
Africa (non-Arab countries)≈11.3%
Europe, the Americas, Australia & Oceania≈3.2%
CountryOfficial 2026 Quota
Pakistan179,210
India175,025
Bangladesh127,198
Egypt35,375

Indonesia traditionally remains the leader in actual pilgrim flow and is the largest beneficiary of the Makkah Route program (39.9% of participants), followed by Bangladesh (23.4%) and Pakistan (16.5%). Quotas are allocated under the “one pilgrim per thousand Muslims” principle, in force since 1988.

Technology: AI Runs the Hajj

5,000+surveillance cameras connected to the “Baseer” and “Sawaher” AI platforms (SDAIA), running 16 computer-vision algorithms
15–20 minadvance warning of dangerous crowd density — pedestrian columns are rerouted before congestion becomes critical
Nusukmandatory digital smart cards: identification, access control, and enforcement of heat-hour restrictions

The Jamarat Bridge, with a capacity of up to 300,000 people per hour, operated under predictive control. Crowd management has definitively shifted from reactive response to proactive forecasting — the new standard under the Pilgrim Experience Program (Vision 2030).

Transport at the Holy Sites: The Shift to Rail

2M+passengers carried by the Al Mashaaer Metro between Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah
1.16Mpilgrims carried by the Haramain High-Speed Railway (Makkah–Jeddah–Madinah), with 98% punctuality
−50,000bus trips eliminated from the valley thanks to the rail backbone

Who Served the Hajj

ServicePersonnelKey Figures
Total workforce deployed441,049+5% vs the previous season
Ministry of Hajj and Umrah111,000+83,000 field inspections of service quality
Makkah municipal services22,000+3,000 units of equipment; 266,000 tonnes of waste removed
Ministry of Environment & Water5,000+camp water supply, environmental monitoring
Volunteer corps26,701translation, navigation, first aid for heatstroke
Media center and MOFA3,000+6,400 publications, 150 accredited media outlets

The number of volunteers fell from 34,540 to 26,701: unskilled labor is being replaced by automation and professional standards. Meanwhile, the Arafat Day sermon was translated live into 50 languages, and more than 227,000 copies of the Holy Quran were gifted to pilgrims at departure points.

Healthcare and the Battle Against Heat

2.5Mfree medical and preventive services provided to pilgrims
410advanced surgeries, including 33 open-heart operations — with robotic assistants and telemedicine
Dronesdelivered medications across high-density crowd zones

After the tragedy of 2024, when extreme heat claimed more than 1,300 lives (most of them unlicensed pilgrims without access to shelters), the Kingdom deployed an unprecedented protection system:

272,000 m²of cooled and shaded zones on the Arafat plain — five times more than before
400+fine-mist water spray stations along key routes
−20°Creduction in walkway surface temperature thanks to the innovative “white roads” coating
Mandatory umbrellas, a ban on leaving the cooled Arafat camps between 10:00 and 16:00, enforcement via Nusuk smart cards — the result: zero epidemics and zero systemic failures.

Enforcement: A Closed, Regulated System

MeasurePenalty / Condition
Performing Hajj without an official licenseSAR 20,000 fine + deportation + 10-year entry ban
Illegally transporting pilgrimsfine up to SAR 100,000 + vehicle confiscation
Entry to Makkah from April 13, 2026only with special permits, work authorizations, or valid Hajj documents
Umrah permits (Nusuk)suspended from April 18 to May 31 for all categories

The takeaway for the market: “grey schemes” are becoming a thing of the past. Access to rescue and cooling infrastructure is guaranteed only to registered pilgrims — a legal, licensed package is now the only safe way to perform Hajj.

The Economics of Hajj

Hajj is Saudi Arabia’s second-largest source of budget revenue after hydrocarbon exports, generating around $15 billion per year. The Vision 2030 target is to grow total religious tourism revenue (including year-round Umrah) to $52 billion. Licensed accommodation grew 22.7% year-on-year to 6,122 properties, with the average stay rising to 4.2 nights.

  • 40% — accommodation in Makkah and Madinah hotels
  • 31% — transport and flights
  • 14% — souvenirs and gifts
  • 10% — food and dining
  • 5% — other expenses
Hotels + transport = 71% of every pilgrim’s spending. This is where the core margin of the Hajj and Umrah market is concentrated.

Geopolitics directly affected prices: escalation in the Gulf and jet fuel reaching $1.37 per liter extended flight routes by an average of four hours. Indonesia subsidized its carrier with $56.7 million, Pakistan held package prices at $4,128–4,487, while Indian government packages cost about $5,400 — with premium private packages more than double that.

Key Takeaways of the Season

1Hajj has become a high-tech industry: AI, big data, and automation are the baseline standard, not an experiment
2Asia is the core of the market (over 60% of the flow), and air travel is the only significant arrival channel (96%)
3Heat is the number-one product factor: comfort, shade, and cooling sell better than anything else
4Enforcement is tightening: the market is growing, but entering it is becoming more expensive and complex
5Rail is replacing buses within the holy sites — a strategic shift in logistics
6From the coming seasons, Hajj moves into cooler months — a new climate window is opening
