Where Islam Began

Jabal al-Nour (جبل النور — “Mountain of Light”) is the sacred mountain where Prophet Muhammad ﷺ received the first divine revelation from Allah through the Angel Jibril (Gabriel). This momentous event occurred in the year 610 CE, during the holy month of Ramadan, inside the small Cave of Hira (غار حراء) located near the summit.

For years before his prophethood, Muhammad ﷺ would retreat to this cave for solitude, contemplation, and worship. It was during one of these periods of spiritual reflection — at the age of 40 — that he was approached by Angel Jibril, who commanded him to “Iqra!” (Read/Recite), thus beginning the revelation of the Holy Quran.

The First Words of the Quran

“Read, in the name of your Lord who created — Created man from a clinging substance. Read, and your Lord is the Most Generous — Who taught by the pen — Taught man that which he knew not.”

— Surah Al-Alaq (96:1-5), the first revelation

The Cave of Hira (غار حراء)

The cave itself is a small, cramped space — approximately 3.7 meters long and 1.6 meters wide. It can accommodate only a handful of people at a time. The entrance faces towards the Kaaba, though this alignment is only visible from inside the cave.

🕰️ Historical Context

Before prophethood, Muhammad ﷺ would spend days and nights in this cave, away from the corruption and idol worship of Makkah. He would bring provisions (usually bread, dates, and water) and engage in deep meditation and worship of the One God.

📐 The Structure

The cave is a natural formation within the granite mountain. Its small size and remote location made it an ideal place for solitude and spiritual connection. The opening faces north, providing a view of Makkah below.

⚠️ Important Note

While the site is of immense historical and spiritual significance, it is important to remember that no ritual or act of worship is prescribed at the cave itself. Visiting is purely for educational and reflective purposes. Do not perform prayers specifically “for” the cave or mountain.

The Hira Cultural District

As part of Saudi Vision 2030, a world-class cultural district has been developed at the foot of Jabal al-Nour. This district transforms the visitor experience through cutting-edge technology, accessibility, and educational excellence:

Practical Climbing Guide

If you decide to climb Jabal al-Nour to reach the Cave of Hira, here is everything you need to know:

🕒

Best Timing

Start your climb after Fajr prayer (around 5:00-6:00 AM) or 1 hour before Maghrib to avoid the extreme desert heat. Midday temperatures can exceed 45°C (113°F), making the climb dangerous. The sunrise and sunset views from the summit are breathtaking.

👟

Proper Footwear is Essential

Wear sturdy athletic shoes or hiking boots with good grip. The path is rocky, uneven, and steep in sections. Sandals, flip-flops, or dress shoes are dangerous and not recommended. Many pilgrims slip and injure themselves due to inappropriate footwear.

💧

Hydration & Supplies

Bring at least 1.5-2 liters of water per person. There are small vendor stalls along the path, but they may not always be open. Also bring: energy snacks (dates, nuts), a hat or umbrella for shade, sunscreen, and a small towel.

⏱️

Time Required

The climb takes 45-90 minutes depending on your fitness level and pace. The descent takes 30-45 minutes. Plan for at least 2-3 hours total including time at the cave. Do not rush — take breaks, stay safe.

Crowd Management

The cave is extremely small and can only fit 3-4 people at a time. Expect to wait in line at the summit, especially during peak Umrah seasons (Ramadan, Hajj). Be patient and respectful. Some people spend only 2-3 minutes inside to allow others a turn.

🚫

What NOT to Do

Do not perform specific prayers or rituals “for” the mountain or cave — this is not part of Islamic practice. Do not litter or leave trash. Do not write your name or graffiti on the rocks. Respect the sanctity and history of the site.

NewHaj Pro Tip for Families & Elderly

If you or your family members find the climb too difficult — whether due to age, health, mobility, or simply preference — don’t worry!

The Hira Cultural District at the base of the mountain is fully accessible and offers an equally meaningful experience. The 4D Revelation Gallery uses cutting-edge technology to transport you inside the cave virtually, allowing you to “experience” the moment of revelation without the physical climb. It’s perfect for families with young children, elderly pilgrims, and anyone who wants to understand the history without the strenuous hike.

Timeline of the First Revelation

Muhammad ﷺ is in the Cave of Hira for his annual retreat. Angel Jibril appears to him.

The Command: “Iqra!”

Jibril commands Muhammad ﷺ to read. He replies, “I cannot read.” This happens three times, with Jibril embracing him tightly each time.

The First Five Verses

Jibril reveals the first verses of Surah Al-Alaq (96:1-5). These words mark the beginning of the Quran’s revelation, which would continue for 23 years.

Return to Khadijah ؓ

Shaken and trembling, Muhammad ﷺ returns home to his wife Khadijah, who comforts him and reassures him that Allah would never forsake him. She takes him to her cousin Waraqah ibn Nawfal, a Christian scholar, who confirms that Muhammad ﷺ is the awaited prophet.
