Makkah Clock Royal Tower ยท The World’s Largest Clock Face
An Architectural Marvel
The Abraj Al Bait (ุฃุจุฑุงุฌ ุงูุจูุช โ “Towers of the House”), also known as the Makkah Clock Royal Tower, is a government-owned mega-tall complex located just steps away from the Grand Mosque (Al-Masjid al-Haram). Completed in 2012, this architectural masterpiece stands as a testament to Saudi Arabia’s commitment to modernizing Makkah while serving the ever-increasing number of pilgrims.
As part of the King Abdulaziz Endowment Project (ููู ุงูู ูู ุนุจุฏ ุงูุนุฒูุฒ), the complex was designed to provide world-class facilities for worshippers while generating revenue to fund the maintenance and expansion of the Two Holy Mosques. The tower holds several world records, including:
Did You Know?
The tower is topped by a massive 23-meter golden crescent that weighs 35 tons. This crescent is visible from across Makkah and serves as a beacon for pilgrims approaching the holy city.
The top of the tower also features high-tech loudspeakers that broadcast the Adhan (Call to Prayer) to a distance of over 7 kilometers, ensuring that millions of pilgrims can hear the call simultaneously.
Key Features of the Complex

Many rooms offer direct, unobstructed views of the Holy Kaaba โ a privilege reserved for only a handful of properties in the world.
Clock Tower Museum (ู ุชุญู ุจุฑุฌ ุงูุณุงุนุฉ)
Located at the very top of the tower, this fascinating museum spans four floors and focuses on the history of timekeeping, astronomy, and the universe from an Islamic perspective. The journey culminates in a stunning observation deck offering 360-degree panoramic views of Makkah and the Grand Mosque. Tickets are available at the entrance near the Fairmont hotel lobby.

Dedicated Prayer Halls
Multiple large prayer spaces throughout the complex can accommodate over 10,000 worshippers at once. These halls are air-conditioned, carpeted, and connected to the Haram’s live audio system, allowing worshippers to pray in sync with the Imam of the Grand Mosque even when the Haram itself is at full capacity.
Underground Tunnels & VIP Access
The complex features a network of climate-controlled underground tunnels that connect directly to the Grand Mosque, allowing VIP guests and hotel residents to reach the Haram in complete comfort and privacy, away from the crowds.
Vision 2030 & The King Abdulaziz Endowment
The Abraj Al Bait complex serves as a cornerstone of Makkah’s urban development strategy under Saudi Vision 2030. All revenues generated by the complex โ from hotel bookings, retail spaces, residential units, and commercial leases โ go directly into the King Abdulaziz Endowment (ููู ุงูู ูู ุนุจุฏ ุงูุนุฒูุฒ).
This endowment is used exclusively to fund:
๐ Maintenance of the Two Holy Mosques
All cleaning, repair, expansion, and operational costs of Al-Masjid al-Haram (Makkah) and Al-Masjid an-Nabawi (Madinah).
๐ฐ Services for Pilgrims
Free water (Zamzam distribution), air conditioning, lighting, security, medical services, and infrastructure improvements for pilgrims.
๐ Islamic Scholarship & Education
Funding for Islamic universities, research centers, and the preservation of Islamic heritage sites across Saudi Arabia.
This sustainable financing model aligns perfectly with Vision 2030’s ambitious goal of hosting 30 million Umrah pilgrims annually by the year 2030, up from approximately 7 million in 2019.
NewHaj Insider Guide for Visitors
To make the most of your visit to the Abraj Al Bait complex, consider these expert local tips:
Best Timing for Shopping & Dining
The mall is extremely busy after Isha prayer (8:00 PM – midnight), especially on weekends and during Ramadan. If you need to shop or eat in peace, visit during the Dhuhr or Asr periods (12:00 PM – 5:00 PM) for a more relaxed, less crowded experience.
Clock Tower Museum Access
Tickets for the museum are available at the entrance near the Fairmont hotel lobby (look for signs in Arabic and English). The best time to visit is just before Maghrib (sunset) โ you’ll experience the museum in daylight and then watch the entire city light up from the observation deck as the sun sets. Absolutely breathtaking.
Meeting Points for Groups
The complex is MASSIVE with many exits, towers, and entrances. It’s very easy to get lost or separated from your group. Always designate a specific meeting point such as “Gate 1 (King Abdulaziz Gate)” or a particular elevator bank. Share your location via WhatsApp or Google Maps pin.
Prayer Facilities When Haram is Full
During peak times (Ramadan, Hajj season, Fridays), the Grand Mosque reaches maximum capacity hours before prayer. The prayer halls within Abraj Al Bait offer a comfortable, air-conditioned alternative with crystal-clear audio streamed live from the Haram Imams. You’ll still pray in congregation with the Imam โ just in a different building.
Currency & Payment
Most shops, restaurants, and services accept credit cards (Visa, Mastercard), but it’s wise to carry some Saudi Riyals (SAR) in cash for smaller vendors, tips, and street food. ATMs are plentiful throughout the complex.
Photography
The clock tower and surrounding plazas are stunning, especially at night when fully illuminated. Photography is allowed in public areas, but be respectful โ never photograph worshippers praying without permission, and avoid flash photography inside the Haram.
